Medieval Collection
What a fabulous way to celebrate an amazing project!
This very pretty cross-stitch collection has a lovely story behind it.....
In the Sixteenth century in Stirling Castle, Scotland there hung a series of amazing woven tapestry wallhangings. They depicted hunting scenes, flowers and animals. They were huge and stunning pieces of medieval needlework. Today those original wallhangings can be seen at The Metropolitan Museum in New York. in the Cloisters venue.
Also today you can visit Stirling Castle were a beautiful project is taking place to reweave those tapestries and replace them in Scotland. So far 2 out of the original 7 have been completed.
Cobweb Designs has been commissioned by Historic Scotland to design needlework kits to celebrate this fabulous project.
Classic Sampler Collection
The Culloden Sampler Collection
The original sampler was started on 10 March 1746. The embroiderer used classic sampler designs until the day of the Battle of Culloden on 16 April 1746 when she added images from the battle. The redcoat soldier was called Peter Law and was probably a relation of the embroiderer. You'll see the alphabets are missing the letter "J" - there was no J in Latin. The finished size of the old sampler was 12" square with 40 stitches to the inch!! (now reproduced to 14 stitches to the inch). The sampler can be seen at The National Trust for Scotland Culloden Visitor Centre near Inverness,Scotland.
The Culzean Collection has been inspired by a very pretty sampler from Culzean Castle on the Scottish Ayrshire Coast. The original embroidery was stitched in 1797.
