The Culloden Sampler 1746

Cross Stitch - Culloden Sampler

The original sampler was started on 10 March 1746. The embroiderer used classic sampler designs until the day of the Battle of Culloden on 16 April 1746 when she added images from the battle. The redcoat soldier was called Peter Law and was probably a relation of the embroiderer. You will note the alphabets are missing the letter "J" - there was no J in Latin. The finished size of the old sampler was 12" square with 40 stitches to the inch!! (now reproduced to 14 stitches to the inch).   The sampler can be seen at The National Trust for Scotland Culloden Visitor Centre near Inverness.
Cobweb Designs was commissioned by the NTS to design cross stitch kits to celebrate this
very special embroidery.
