William
Wordsworth |
 |
1770
– 1850
William
Wordsworth, born in Cockermouth in 1770, the son of a Lakeland
lawyer, was to become one of England’s greatest poets. His
parents died when he was young and he was brought up by an uncle
and aunt. He was educated at the grammar school of
Hawkshead and St John’s College, Cambridge, followed by
travels on the continent.
William
returned to his favourite area, the Lake District, to live with
his wife, Mary Hutchinson, and his sister, Dorothy at Dove
Cottage, Grasmere.
In 1813 they moved to nearby Rydal Mount where he was to
die on 23 April 1850. He is buried in Grasmere churchyard.
This sampler depicts the buildings, which shared in the life of
this special man. The quote is from “I wondered lonely as a
cloud” – perhaps one of his most remembered poems.
