needlework tutor will be Sally Scott Aiton.
Sally is the designer and creator of COBWEB DESIGNS. The company
excels in needlework
design with clients throughout the heritage world. Her talent and
experience of embroidery design,
needlework skills and use of colour is an inspiration.

Programme:
Day
1
- Wednesday 18 June 2008
Morning:
The
morning will be spent experimenting with fabrics, threads and
textures to find your preference.
We will discuss how to decide what scale an embroidery can be
– looking at a 5 inch (12cm) little cross stitch bookmark
design through to a 5 foot (1.75m ) patchwork wall hanging - each inspired by the same image.

Lunch:
At
Mellerstain House
Afternoon:
Study
time at Mellerstain to enjoy and be inspired by a family who have
stitched for generations.
The embroidery collection includes needlepoint, samplers, crewel
work, cross stitch, beautiful costumes, fans
and
beadwork.
The classic Robert Adam architecture, fabulous ceilings, rich
furnishings and soft, pastel,
interior colours will give you further inspiration along with the
stunning gardens, ornamental trees, the lake and views of the
Scottish Borders countryside.
During the afternoon at Mellerstain we will discuss what elements
of image, design and colour
make something special to us.
Day 2 - Thursday 19 June 2008
Morning:
Presentation
of

Case study – The Mellerstain Raspberry cross stitch pincushion
and needlepoint, beaded
cushion - each inspired by the same image.
How to translate an image into an embroidery. Working on graph
paper, canvas and fabric.
All the tricks – tracing to photocopiers – how to make life
easy!
Demo: Designing by computer and light box.
Discussion on colour and its options. How to create a palette.

Afternoon:
Following on from the morning and making your project
decisions.
Day 3 - Friday 20 June 2008
Morning:
Case
study - Maths and Geometry! Needlepoint, patchwork and collage
projects all
inspired by the same tiled floor. How to take colour and design a
step further - alter your vision!
Individual time will be given to each student to implement your
project
Lunch:
At Burnbrae
Afternoon:
Students
who have chosen a very simple project and finish it quickly will
be encouraged to start stitching if we
have stock of the
materials you require. Alternatively you can try another
design option. Those who have taken on large and challenging
projects will leave with full knowledge of how to complete
their work at home.
During the 3 days we will also discuss how to buy, where to buy
and how much to buy of the materials required
for a project
and what is helpful to have as basic kit.
You will have access to a library of needlework books along
with shade cards and product samples from Europe's top thread
and fabric manufacturers.
Show
& Tell – students explain their train of thought and show us
their work.
All
students will be given personal helpline access and tutor contact
information.
